Defence Minister Anita Anand said Sunday that Canada has halted all flights from the Wadi Sayyidna Airport in Khartoum as a result of deteriorating conditions in Sudan.

“The situation remains volatile, dangerous and unpredictable,” she said in a news conference Sunday, confirming Global News reporting Saturday that no further air evacuations were planned in the conflict-ridden African nation.

She said Canadian officials and military personnel have relocated to Port of Sudan, where they continue to focus on evacuation efforts.

Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre added that seats are available to Canadians on U.S.-led convoys carrying people to the port, which is a roughly 12-hour drive from the capital.

Canada already has naval capabilities at the port and it has been a key location for other countries evacuating their citizens.
