United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the outbreak of fighting in Sudan during a UN meeting in New York City on Monday. He appealed to the leaders of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to immediately cease hostilities, restore calm and begin a dialogue to resolve the crisis.
"I urge all those with influence over the situation to use it in the cause of peace — to support efforts to end the violence, restore order, and return to the path of transition," he said. "The humanitarian situation in Sudan was already precarious and is now catastrophic."
"We're fine, we're safe, the power has been out," Khartoum resident Tagreed Abdin said in a video posted to social media, as loud explosions could be heard behind her. "But, we're good. We keep in touch with family via text, via very short phone calls just to check in on each other... Yesterday, we heard that a coworker was killed."
The clashes, which have also spread to other parts of Sudan, are the first such outbreak of violence in the capital in recent decades and pit the armed forces against the powerful paramilitary RSF. According to reports, nearly 200 have been killed and 1,800 wounded in the deadly clashes.
