During a Thursday housing announcement in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed that the first evacuation flight from Israel carrying 130 Canadians has arrived safely in Athens from Tel Aviv, Israel.

He said that a second plane has already landed in Tel Aviv, which will also be bringing people to Greece in a few hours, and added that the federal government is working on additional options for those who cannot reach the airport in Tel Aviv to provide assistance and logistical support.

During the same remarks, he announced that Canada is going to provide $10 million in humanitarian aid for Israel and the Gaza Strip, following the attacks by Hamas last weekend.

Trudeau announced that Canada will build 50 "new, affordable homes" in Yellowknife with federal funding under the Rapid Housing Initiative, after the territory saw nearly 70 per cent of its population displaced by wildfires and a record amount of land burnt during the fire season.
