Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that he had informed the country’s premiers the federal government would be covering the cost of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and the supplies needed to administer it. He also announced the government would create a federal support program around vaccine safety for all Canadians and all vaccines, stressing that vaccines are safe and effective.

It was part of a briefing held following his and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc's meeting with Canada's premiers. Trudeau was joined by chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam and Maj. Gen. Dany Fortin, the military commander leading vaccination logistics for the government.

Fortin said that the first shipments of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine will leave tomorrow and potentially arrive on Monday. He said there are 14 sites that will get the vaccine, with the potential of more being added later.

Asked about security for the vaccine supply, Fortin said due to potential threats that may exist, they would prefer not to divulge routing, exact location or transfer points to protect the “integrity of the supply chain.” He added they were also ensuring provinces of various levels were aware of any potential concerns.
