U.S. President Joe Biden pledged on Thursday that the federal government would cover 100 per cent of cost for the first 30 days of the search and rescue efforts at the Surfside condominium that collapsed last week , adding that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) would be providing temporary housing and other urgent needs for survivors.

He also spoke about meeting with family members of the people missing or dead in the Surfside building collapse in Florida that occurred last week. He said he spoke with every person who wanted to speak with him, saying they were praying and pleading for a "miracle," and adding they would also continue to keep in touch with the families through the process.

The confirmed death toll rose to 18 on Wednesday with the discovery of six more bodies in the ruins of the Champlain Towers South condo, including the remains of two children, aged 4 and 10, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said. Another 145 people are missing.

The search was suspended in the early morning hours on Thursday due to concerns about the stability of the remaining structure, the Miami Herald reported, citing police multiple officers.
