Surfside building collapse: Search efforts resume after safety-related pause, officials say | FULL

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Thursday that at approximately 4:45 p.m. local time, they had resumed search and rescue efforts following a pause earlier in the day due to safety concerns.

She also said they were in the planning process for the "likely" demolition of the building while efforts continue but the decision has to be made "extremely carefully." The number of deaths, missing and accounted for remains

Search crews that have been atop the pile of rubble for the last week stopped work shortly after 2 a.m. on Thursday out of concern about the stability of the remaining structure, officials said.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden travelled to Surfside, offering 100 per cent coverage of costs related to the search and rescue efforts by the federal government for the first 30 days.

At least 18 people have been killed by the collapse and 145 are still missing.
