Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced Wednesday evening that eight more bodies had been found in the Surfside building collapse, bringing the death toll to 54, with 86 still "potentially" unaccounted for."

She also announced the search and rescue effort was transitioning into a recovery effort.

A total of 18 bodies were reported found on Wednesday, with 10 having been announced earlier in the day — the single largest number of victims found since the collapse occurred and search efforts began.

Of the 54 victims, 33 have been identified and next of kin notified.

Workers continued to sift through the rubble of the collapsed Champlain Towers South building in warm, dry conditions as Tropical Storm Elsa battered western Florida on the opposite side of the state, moving further away from the site.

As of Wednesday, 200 people have also been accounted for.
