In the wake of the deadly partial collapse of an oceanfront building in the community of Surfside, Fla., Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said on Friday that officials “still have hope” that people will be found alive as search and rescue efforts continue.

The mayor said Friday that four people are confirmed dead and 159 people are still unaccounted for after a wing of the 12-story building came down around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Raide Jadallah on Friday described efforts to find people trapped in the wreckage, stating that emergency crews are “listening for sounds” of tapping, twisting of steel or “debris raining down.”

Meanwhile, the mayor commended rescue crews for the “extraordinary risk” they are taking as search and rescue efforts continue. Debris is falling on them,” the mayor said, describing the extreme conditions rescue teams are working in.
