Surfside building collapse: Search for victims suspended as engineers assess demolition | FULL

Authorities in Surfside, Fla., said search and rescue efforts have been temporarily suspended on a partially collapsed condo complex near Miami Beach as engineers assess and prepare for demolition of the remaining structure.

Search efforts will continue on portions that are deemed safe as soon as they are able to, Daniella Levine Cava said during a briefing Saturday.

Cava said the number of people found dead in the rubble remains at 24. The number of people accounted for is now at 191 while people unaccounted for is at 121.

There remains no timetable for the rapid control demolition of the structure, but authorities are hopeful that it will take place before Tropical Storm Elsa could hit the area.

Miami-Dade Fire Chief Alan Cominsky told reporters the demolition of what was left standing of the towers had to take place as soon as possible because Elsa is forecast to reach southern Florida as early as Monday. “We’d have no control of where it lands,” he said.
