Authorities in Surfside, Fla., say a controlled demolition of the remaining standing portions of the collapsed condo complex will occur between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Sunday and into Monday morning.
Rescue crews made way for demolition teams on Saturday as officials shifted their focus to bringing down the unstable remainder of the structure ahead of Tropical Storm Elsa. Officials praised the looming presence of Elsa, saying the storm helped initiate the demolition discussion.
Once the "energetic felling" of the building using gravity is complete, first responders will continue their search as soon as it's deemed safe to do so.
The search and rescue mission was suspended Saturday afternoon so workers could begin the precarious business of boring holes to hold explosives in the concrete of the still-standing portion of the Champlain Towers South tower, Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah told relatives awaiting word on missing loved ones.
Jadallah said the pause was a necessary safety measure because the drilling could cause the structure to fail. If that were to happen, he said, “It’s just going to collapse without warning.”
