Coronavirus: Canadian officials detail new COVID-19 testing requirements for travellers | FULL

Transport Minister Marc Garneau, alongside other Canadian ministers, discussed on Wednesday new requirements that mandate travellers flying to Canada to show a negative COVID-19 test result from within 72 hours prior to boarding a plane.

Canada is bringing the measures into place in a bid to quell new cases of COVID-19, preventing those carrying the virus from stepping foot on Canadian soil. The restriction comes in addition to existing measures, which include tightened borders, recommendations against non-essential travel, and a mandatory 14-day quarantine for passengers arriving in Canada.

Garneau was joined by Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Canadian Health Minister Patty Hajdu and Bill Blair, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to provide the update.

Champagne strongly recommended that Canadians avoid all non-essential travel out of the country, stating that those who decide to travel “may face fewer transportation options,” making it harder to return to Canada. “This is not a time for leisure travel abroad,” he added.

Garneau also confirmed that Canada is ending its ban on flights from the United Kingdom as the new coronavirus variant continues to spread within the U.K.’s borders. “We have made that decision based on the fact that we have now put in place, since that original ban, a pre-departure testing protocol," he said.
