Ontario Premier Doug Ford discussed on Monday the delay in Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine shipments, saying the federal government notified them on Friday that Ontario would receive no Pfizer vaccine dose deliveries this week, and to expect a smaller amount in the following week.

Ford said that in response, "officials have worked around the clock" and that the province is accelerating vaccinations for vulnerable seniors and those who take care of them. The Premier said he has asked Gen. Rick Hillier of the COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force to complete all long-term care homes and high-risk retirement homes provincewide by Feb. 5 instead of Feb. 15.

"We're using every single vaccine we can to protect our most vulnerable," he stated.

During the briefing, Ford also discussed incoming travellers, saying it’s “absolutely critical” to test every person flying into Pearson International Airport or coming over a land crossing, encouraging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to “close down any travel coming into Canada" outside of residents or citizens.

Ontario reported 1,958 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday, bringing the provincial total to 256,960. The death toll in the province has risen to 5,846 after 43 more deaths were reported.
