Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam discussed COVID-19 vaccines during a briefing on Friday, saying when one becomes available, there will be a limited supply at first and that federal, provincial and territorial governments will have to decide how to use the initial supply.

Tam also stated the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) provided guidance on populations that should be considered for early COVID-19 immunizations, including people at high risk of severe outcomes.

Tam spoke at the briefing alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his government would be extending the Innovation Assistance Program with a new investment of $155 million. Trudeau stated that the technology and innovation sector “will continue to be a key tool in creating good jobs and rebuilding a stronger, more competitive economy.”

Canada reported 3,116 newly confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Thursday, pushing its total COVID-19 infections past the grim milestone of 250,000.
