Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott announced the launch of a new COVID-19 testing pilot program on Wednesday that would allow all international travellers coming to Ontario to receive “free and voluntary” coronavirus testing, conducted in terminals 1 and 3 at Toronto Pearson Airport.

Elliott made the announcement alongside Premier Doug Ford on Wednesday, as officials provide an update on the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement comes as the federal government’s regulations requiring incoming travellers to provide a negative PCR COVID-19 test within 72 hours come into effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on Jan. 7.

Ford also reiterated his previous claims Wednesday that he had not known ahead of time about former finance minister Rod Phillips decision to travel to St. Barts during the holidays, adding that he was “very, very clear” with cabinet and caucus members that they should not travel.

The premier said the province is running out of vaccines as it moves forward with its vaccination rollout, stating that it receives very short notice, of just 24 hours, before receiving new shipments.
