Ontario Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott provided an update Tuesday on the province's health-care system's capacity, alongside CEO of Ontario Health Matthew Anderson.
Elliott announced the province would be deploying internationally-educated nurses to hospitals and long-term care homes in need of staffing support due to COVID-19. She said more than 1,200 applicants had already expressed interest, and the hospital matching process would begin later this week.
Elliott also said Ontario is updating its COVID-19 reporting to distinguish between patients hospitalized due to the virus and incidental admissions, or those who are admitted for other reasons but have tested positive.
New data indicates that 46 per cent of people currently in Ontario hospitals with COVID-19 were admitted for reasons other than the coronavirus.
The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 is up by 753 compared to Monday’s report, though the figure reported Monday was likely an undercount since not all hospitals report data on weekends.
