Parents in Ontario are set to receive “Catch Up Payments” as part of the provincial government’s plan to help support students after COVID-19 learning disruptions, Education Minister Stephen Lecce said Thursday.

The Ontario government will offer parents $200 or $250 per child to help “offset costs” incurred by parents attempting to help their children catch up on lost learning. The government is investing a total of $365 million in direct financial relief to Ontario parents, Lecce said.

Speaking about the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on students who were pulled out of the classroom in order to protect their health, Lecce said it “could not be clearer” that students must be kept in the classroom without disruption.

“It didn’t start in the pandemic, it started with the disruptions of strikes,” he added, as talks have broken down with the union representing thousands of education workers in the province.

About 55,000 education workers in Ontario, such as custodians, early childhood educators, and administration staff will be in a legal strike position as of Nov. 3.

CUPE has not indicated if education workers would engage in a full strike — that could potentially close schools – or start with a work-to-rule campaign, or take some other course of action.
