As cases of COVID-19 surge in Ontario amid a deepening third wave, staff in intensive care units (ICUs) are feeling the pressure.
The province has promised more beds as a way of helping hospitals, but caring for the severely ill requires specialized staff and in particular, critical care nurses. In hospitals across the province, such expertise is in short supply.
Many hospitals across Ontario, including Humber River Hospital in Toronto, have redeployed staff to help assist the nurses providing critical care, but more than a year into the pandemic, everyone is stretched thin.
