Global National: July 30, 2022 | No Quick fix for Ontario ER rooms shuttered over staffing shortages

Tonight’s top story: Emergency rooms across the country are in crisis right now. In Ontario, some hospital departments have been shuttered due to staffing shortages. Meanwhile, some patients have had to wait more than 20 hours for treatment. Frontline staff are begging the government for help but as Mike Drolet reports, the problem has no short-term solution.

Officials in Montreal are worried some upcoming tourist events may cause a spike in Monkeypox cases in that city. The warning comes one week after the World Health Organization officially declared a public health emergency. As Dan Spector reports, the concerns come as both the distribution and efficacy of the vaccine face questions.

Soaring temperatures in western Canada have sparked dozens of new wildfires in B.C. and put Albertans on edge. One of the largest wildfires is in B.C.’s Okanagan region, where nearly two dozen properties are under an evacuation order. Alberta hasn’t seen any major fires yet but firefighters there are prepared to deploy at a moment’s notice. Tracy Nagai reports.

Rescue crews continue to search for people reported missing after record flooding in eastern Kentucky that swallowed creek-side towns and swamped homes and businesses. As Jennifer Johnson reports, some waterways are still cresting and there is more rain in the forecast for Sunday and Monday.

Still hurting from his 2020 election loss and facing potential prosecution, there are signs former U.S. president Donald Trump is preparing to make another run at the White House. He may even launch his campaign before this November’s critical midterm elections. Jackson Proskow reports.
