Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore urged people Thursday to stay home if they develop symptoms of COVID-19, with or without a test, adding that “testing is a luxury” given what he said is a global shortage of rapid antigen tests.

Moore said he would not seek out a confirmatory test if he were to develop symptoms and would simply stay home for the five-day isolation period.

He said the province is awaiting the delivery of rapid antigen tests from the federal government, but said the first tests would be used “to keep our vulnerable settings safe” – pointing for the need for rapid antigen tests in hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes and other congregate settings.

A briefing document released by the Ontario government on Thursday said the province requested an allocation of 68.6 million rapid antigen tests for January, but that the federal government has only committed to providing 54.3 million.
