Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore explained on Monday his decision to recommend - and not mandate- mask-wearing indoors for people as cases of COVID-19, SRV and flu surge.
Dr. Moore said his responsibility is to “inform” Ontarians about the complex threat of three different illnesses circulating around, specifically among young children of four years and under who can’t wear masks.
Dr. Moore pleaded for older people to step up their layers of protection, which include mask-wearing, as Ontario’s Ministry of Health is instructing emergency departments to prepare for “an extreme surge” in demand.
An update from the Ministry of Health Monday said plans are also in place to expand pediatric capacity to 150 per cent, with a reduction in planned surgeries at most pediatric centres to create capacity.
Officials said making capacity for pediatric health care would mean other parts of the system are “impacted.” They said the system was “extraordinarily strained.”
