Ontario's chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore provided an update Tuesday about the province's COVID-19 situation as the Omicron variant continues to rapidly spread across the province.

Many provincial rollouts of COVID-19 rapid tests, including Ontario's, have been met with long queues and inadequate supply. Moore said the province is trying to purchase more rapid COVID-19 tests, but if there is a limited supply “we really need to use them for high-risk contact health care workers, essential workers.”

Moore also addressed the province's ICU admissions, saying that while there are 165 COVID-19 ICU admissions, the vast majority are the Delta variant and there are currently none related to the Omicron variant. “We’re actively monitoring when all of that transitions to Omicron,” he stated.

The Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table estimates that each person with the Omicron variant infects on average more than three others, which would account for the rapidly climbing case counts in the province.
