Ontario's chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore acknowledged the sixth wave of COVID-19 during his first update since early March.

"While we will not be reinstating a broad mask mandate at this time, we should all be prepared that we may need to resume a requirement for mask-wearing in indoor spaces if a new variant of concern emerges, a threat to our healthcare system or potentially during the winter months when COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses are likely to emerge again," Moore said.

Moore says the wave is being driven by the BA.2 variant and that the province is seeing an increase in per cent positivity rate in wastewater surveillance and in hospitalizations.

He says the upward trends are expected to continue for the next several weeks but that the impact could be managed by personal protective measures including a well-fitted, three-layer mask or medical mask in all indoor public settings.

Moore also suggests staying up-to-date on booster shots while antiviral treatments can reduce hospitalizations, protect hospital capacity and protect high-risk patients from severe outcomes.

Starting April 12, Ontario will make it easier for eligible individuals with a prescription to access antivirals by expanding dispensing locations to include participating pharmacies across the province.
