Canada's deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo said during a news conference on Thursday that 25 cases of monkeypox in Quebec and one case in Ontario have been confirmed.

These are the first known cases of monkeypox in Canada, he added. Njoo said symptoms of monkeypox include skin rash, fever, headache, muscle ache, exhaustion and swollen lymph nodes.

He said mass vaccinations are not yet needed to combat the rising cases of monkeypox in Canada, but people should keep their distance from others to avoid catching the virus.

Njoo said because the virus “doesn’t discriminate” and can be spread through close contact with an infected person, people can avoid infection by “maintaining physical distance from people outside their homes.”
