World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that COVID-19 cases worldwide have seen a 30 per cent increase in the last two weeks and that more 6,000 cases of monkeypox have now been reported from 58 countries in the current outbreak.

He added that the increase in COVID-19 cases is driven by new coronavirus subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 in Europe and the U.S., as well as subvariant BA.2.75 being detected in India.

COVID-19 testing has decreased dramatically in many countries, which obscures the full picture of virus spread, Tedros said.

He referred the increase to several factors, including that treatments aren’t given early enough to prevent serious illness and deaths, and that new promising antiviral pills and other treatments aren’t reaching low- and middle-income countries, depriving whole populations that need them.
