World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that the number of COVID-19 cases reported globally each week has “almost doubled” in the past six weeks, with reported deaths also rising.
“This virus will continue to evolve and we must be ready for whatever it throws at us,” he said.
Tedros said countries that have begun to dismantle public health measures put in place during the pandemic “are taking a huge risk.”
He encouraged countries to address gaps in surveillance, immunity, workforce and supplies while hospitalizations due to COVID-19 remain at a lower level.
