Canada’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Theresa Tam told a press conference on Friday that although the U.S. is ending its testing program for travellers entering the country, Canada is not yet ready to do the same. She said that the health agency needs to monitor for new variants, as well as keep layers of protection for the travel sector as an uncertain winter approaches.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has confirmed a total of 112 monkeypox cases, Tam said. This includes one case in B.C., four in Alberta, nine in Ontario, and 98 in Quebec.

She also confirmed all the cases are in men.

Monkeypox is a rare disease that comes from the same family of viruses that cause smallpox, which the World Health Organization (WHO) declared eradicated worldwide in 1980.
