Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam discussed Friday the efforts to monitor new variants of the novel coronavirus. She said, of the variant first identified in the U.K., Canada has reported 31 cases. There are three reported cases of the variant from South Africa.

Tam made the statement at a media availability along with Health Minister Patty Hajdu, Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Public Safety Minister Bill Blair, along with Deputy chief public health officer Howard Njoo.

Blair addressed how the new U.S. administration could impact travel between the two countries. He said the Canadian government is “already reaching out” to the Biden administration, adding that a “significant opportunity” has arisen thanks to the change in the United States’ approach to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tam reported on Friday that there have been more than 731,000 cases of the novel coronavirus in Canada, including 18,622 deaths.
