François-Philippe Champagne, minister of innovation, science and technology, provided a timeline Tuesday for the deal Canada has signed with pharma company Novavax to produce its COVID-19 vaccine, stating that construction on the facility that will produce the vaccine should be complete by the end of summer.
Novovax’s COVID-19 vaccine will be the first to be produced domestically in Canada.
Champagne made the comments during a media availability with other ministers and Canadian health officials on the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Public Services and Procurement Minister Anita Anand also announced on Tuesday that Canada has purchased 644 million low dead space syringes, which are necessary to obtain the six dose from COVID-19 vaccine vials like those provided by Pfizer. She said the first shipment of one million units would be received this week.
There have been 783,589 cases of COVID-19 in Canada and 20,136 deaths, according to chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam. She says national daily case counts have continued to decline over the past three weeks, but cautioned that public health rules put in place to curb the spread of the virus are still needed because of the threat from variants that originated in the U.K. and South Africa.
