Canadian health officials provided an update on Friday on the government's ongoing response amid the country's 6th wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam reiterated the importance of keeping up-to-date with vaccines in the "Omicron era" of the pandemic as air travel measures eased.

The briefing comes after the federal government said on Friday that beginning on April 25 at 1 a.m. ET, children in that age group who are accompanied by a fully vaccinated parent, step parent, guardian or tutor will no longer be required to complete a pre-entry COVID-19 test.

Earlier this week, the Feds said that Canada would keep its mask mandate for airplanes, trains and other federally-regulated public transportation despite the end of a similar rule in the U.S.

"Right now within the Canadian context, Omicron, BA.2 is going strong and you’re going to be travelling with people in a certain environment I think it is prudent to continue to require wearing a mask," Dr. Theresa Tam said.

Travellers entering Canada by plane or through land borders must also wear a mask in all public spaces for 14 days -- despite that federal rule conflicting with most provinces that have dropped their own indoor mask mandates.

Meanwhile, Uber is dropping its mask mandates for customers and drivers in Canada, except in Quebec. However, the ride-hailing company says it still strongly recommends wearing a mask depending on a person’s personal risk factors and infection rates in their area.
