Alberta wildfire officials are expected to provide an update on the ongoing situation in the province on Sunday.

On Friday, officials said that despite more seasonable weather conditions, the big wildfires burning in Alberta will take months to put out.

“We have a lot of large-scale wildfires burning on the landscape right now," said Melissa Story, an information officer with Alberta Wildfire. “It is going to take months to put these out," she added.

The extreme rate of wildfire growth seen at the beginning of May has slowed down since the long weekend.

Spring of 2023 has been the most active wildfire season in Alberta's recorded history, with more than 1,000,035 hectares burnt by 523 wildfires, as of Friday.

At this time last year, only 450 hectares had burned. While 2023 is the highest number on record for area covered by spring wildfires, 1984 still had the highest burn rate across the entire season, with 1.3 million hectares.
