A fire ban across much of Alberta’s forest protection area is set to be lowered to a restriction in a large portion of the area.
A fire restriction allows people to have wood campfires in designated campgrounds and on private property, like a backyard fire pit, according to Christie Tucker with Alberta Wildfire.
However, a ban is still in effect for certain areas of the province.
“Because the north of the province received less rainfall and the fire danger remains high, the fire ban and off-highway vehicle restrictions will remain in place in the High Level and Fort McMurray forest areas. It will also be maintained in Yellowhead County, where we still have active wildfires,” said Tucker.
“We're taking a cautious approach to prevent as many wildfires as possible, but as long as it's safe to do so, we want Albertans to be able to enjoy the outdoors,” Tucker added.
There are currently 55 wildfires burning in the forest protection area with 16 classified as out-of-control according to Alberta Wildfire.
