Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau marked the second annual National Day of Truth and Reconciliation with a call to all Canadians to take part in the process of reconciliation, especially following the discovery of unmarked burial sites at former residential schools.

“Reconciliation is the responsibility of all Canadians,” he said.

“And we know it will take time. It’s important to listen, to learn and to move forward to not repeat the mistakes of the past.”

While speaking at an event in Ontario’s Niagara Region, Trudeau said it was his privilege to listen to the stories of residential school survivors and to reflect on his own responsibility to ensure that Canada is moving in the “right direction” when it comes to truth and reconciliation.

Speaking about the terrible impact of residential schools, Trudeau said the “untruths” they taught are still with us and “built into the very stones of our institutions.”
