The federal government laid out its plans to ban some single-use plastics in Canada, with the first step being a ban on manufacturing and import of six items, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault and Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced Monday.

The items that will be banned as the plan rolls out are checkout bags, stir sticks, cutlery, ring carriers, straws and food service ware made from or containing plastics that are hard to recycle, such as styrofoam.

Businesses will have until December 2023 to get rid of their stock of these items as a ban on the sale of these categories of single-use plastics will take effect.

By the end of 2025, the ban will further expand to a prohibition on exports of these items.

The draft regulations to ban six plastic items were published in December and the government has to have at least a six-month-long phase-in period once the final regulations are published this month.

Guilbeault said that while he recognizes some countries announced bans of certain types of plastics, he considered Canada still "leading in the pack." He said, "I don't think we can ban our way out of plastic pollution," however regulation is part of the solution.

Guilbeault also spoke about a ban on exports of certain plastics by the end of 2025, which was an add to the ban, he said it became clear based on science and evidence it needed to be added.
