In memory of the thousands of children who were sent to residential schools, of those who never returned, and in honour of the families whose lives were forever changed, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Gov. Gen. Mary Simon participated in a flag-raising ceremony to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day during a ceremony on Parliament Hill Wednesday.

"Every day I see Indigenous peoples stepping up in extraordinary ways to shape not just the future of their communities or their nations but of this country. As I point out reconciliation is not only the responsibility of Indigenous peoples, it is the responsibility of every single Canadian," Trudeau said.

Canada’s residential school system locked away more than 150,000 Indigenous children, ripping them from their families and communities in an effort to erase Indigenous cultural identity. Thousands died from abuse, disease and malnutrition, and countless more were subjected to sickening physical and sexual violence by priests and nuns.

An unknown number never returned home, and last July, Pope Francis affirmed what survivors and their families have been saying for decades, calling the residential schools an act of “genocide.”
