The summer solstice, known as the longest day of the year, coincides with National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada, which marks cultural significance for First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
The day was first celebrated in 1996, after it was proclaimed that year by then Governor General Roméo LeBlanc.
