Toronto Mayor John Tory was joined Wednesday by the city's chief medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa and fire chief Matthew Pegg delivered an update on the city’s COVID-19 cases and the ongoing response to the pandemic. They reported 789 new cases of COVID-19 in the city.

The city's top doctor also said 421 people are in hospital due to the illness, with 108 in intensive care. There are 23 new deaths due to COVID-19 in Toronto.

When asked about his request for more clarity on the latest COVID-19 restrictions by the Ontario government, Tory said there's an "onus on those who make rules," including the city, and it would be "advantageous" if there were clear and consistent public health rules across the region and the province.

On Tuesday the Ontario government declared a state of emergency — the second since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic — and issued a stay-at-home order.

Premier Doug Ford said the state of emergency will be in effect for at least 28 days, and the stay-at-home order will take effect on Thursday at 12:01 a.m.
