Pushing forward to victory following a close call with opponent Ana Bailão, Olivia Chow has been elected as the next mayor of Toronto.

In a race that saw a staggering 102 candidates, the former NDP MP won the race Monday night by nearly five points in a surprise turnaround, earning 37.2 per cent of the city’s vote (approx. 260,000 people) — winning the title by the lowest total vote of any mayor since amalgamation.

“Thank you to the people of Toronto for the trust you’ve placed in me and the mandate for change as your new mayor,” Chow said, in her victory speech.

Chow said she knows it has been tough to live in Toronto, with the skyrocketing cost of living, and lack of affordable housing.

“It’s harder to get by, and it’s harder to get around,” she said. “But Toronto is a place of hope, of second chances. I believe in Toronto’s future because we all share one thing — hope.”
