After a municipal race contested by 31 mayoral candidates, voters in Toronto have elected incumbent John Tory to a third term at the head of city council. Tory was confirmed as the winning candidate leading with 62 per cent of the vote, while Gil Penalosa sat in second place with around 18 per cent.
“Tonight is a great night as we look ahead to a third term,” Tory said, speaking at the Fairmont Royal Hotel in Toronto. He added that he is looking forward to a third term with a “strong mandate.”
In addition to Tory’s re-election, Bonnie Crombie also secured another victory in Mississauga and Patrick Brown was re-elected as mayor of Brampton. In Scarborough Centre, Michael Thompson was re-elected as city councillor after having served 19 years, despite recent controversies from sexual assault charges.
In Ottawa, the city saw an open race as Jim Watson did not run again. The Canadian capital has a new mayor with former journalist Mark Sutcliffe, who coasted to victory over councillor Catherine McKenney.
