Following Ontario Premier Doug Ford's announcement of Toronto and Peel Region entering a lockdown due to rising COVID-19 cases on Friday, Toronto Mayor John Tory said without restrictions like these, the coronavirus could "spread like wildfire."

The mayor added that city officials are working on a plain-language guide to explain the varying levels of coronavirus restrictions with ease so people could best understand and follow the guidelines. Tory also reiterated the need for people to stay home "because it is the right thing to do" as Ontario faces a second wave of the pandemic.

Toronto Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa also voiced her concern for the city's rising number of COVID-19 cases following the lockdown announcement.

"This is not what I want to see," the city's top doctor said, stating her worry that hospitals could become overwhelmed if the pandemic isn't under control.

When asked about the economic health of small businesses, Tory said that this method (the lockdown) is the only way at this time to ensure COVID-19 cases get under control and to ensure the future of the economy.
