John Tory delivered his final remarks as Toronto mayor on Friday after submitting his official resignation a day earlier. Tory said leaving his post as mayor “was the right thing to do” although it was difficult.

Tory spoke about his hopes for the city and listed some of the achievements he hopes to be remembered for including getting “back to building transit,” as well as building housing and making “critical investments in front-line services.”

Meanwhile, Interim Mayor Jennifer McKelvie admitted she was “emotional” as she takes over from former mayor John Tory, who resigned from the position after admitting to an affair with a staffer.

McKelvie said she has “a lot of respect” for Tory and called his decision to resign “admirable,” noting that he “looked to what was best for him, best for his family and best for the city of Toronto.”

She said the byelection to elect a new Toronto mayor would be the largest the city has ever run and that it “would take some time and some preparation.”
