Chrystia Freeland said Wednesday it was “entirely untrue” that she had urged Toronto mayor John Tory to reverse his decision to resign, despite reporting by City News. She said his decision to resign was the “right thing to do.”

Freeland’s comments come as Toronto’s city council held a chaotic budget meeting that was repeatedly disrupted on Wednesday and as Ontario Premier Doug Ford called on Tory to stay in office.

“It’s not time to change. Everything’s tickety-boo in Toronto, working well with the federal and provincial government and what happens in their private life is strictly up to the mayor and their family,” Ford said.

The city budget meeting was suspended twice almost as soon as it began on Wednesday. It got underway around noon after two lengthy delays and after security forcibly removed protesters who had interrupted Tory with shouts of “house the homeless, feed the poor, kick John Tory out the door.”

The mayor did not address his controversy as the meeting resumed. The budget is the first Tory prepared under the new “strong mayor” powers granted by the provincial government.
