Mayor John Tory and Toronto's chief medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa provided an update Wednesday on the city's school reopening plan, after the Ontario government announced that Toronto as well as Peel and York Regions, regions which have been hit hard by coronavirus case totals, will reopen facilities for students on Feb. 16.

The three regions will be last to return to the classroom under the province’s elementary and secondary school reopening plan. Those who attend schools in the remaining 13 regions that are also closed in the province will return to in-person learning on Feb. 8.

Tory said he was “in full support” of the school reopening approach taken by Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Education Minister Stephen Lecce, “including the approach taken with respect to City of Toronto schools in particular.”

Dr. de Villa discussed protocols for the city’s school reopening plan, saying “there are systems in place provided by the province, the school boards and schools, testing partners and Toronto Public Health.”

Officials said individual public health units continue to reserve the authority to close schools to in-person learning based on local circumstances.
