Ontario's chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams announced Thusrday the province would officially move into Step 2 of its reopening plan early on June 30, instead of the originally scheduled date of July 2.
Williams was joined by Dr. Kieran Moore, who will replace him as the province's top doctor as Williams retires from the role.
Under the next step, personal care services such as hair and nail salons would be able to reopen provided employees and customers wear masks. Malls would also be allowed to reopen to in-person shopping with capacity limits. Outdoor activities such as sports and leagues will also see fewer limits imposed.
The expected move comes as the province's COVID-19 vaccination rate has already surpassed the benchmarks set for Step 3 of its reopening, which was 70 to 80 per cent with a first dose of the vaccine and 25 per cent of people with a second dose. As of Thursday, 76.67 per cent of people 18 and older had at least one dose, with 29.10 per cent with a second.
