Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced Monday that the province would move into Step 2 of the province’s staged reopening plan.
Effective immediately, updated health measures are in place for indoor fitness facilities and libraries. However, changes to the restrictions for retail, children’s sports, hotels, banquet halls, and community halls have been delayed as a precautionary measure.
Libraries in Alberta are allowed to open but must limit capacity to 15 per cent of fire code occupancy, not including staff.
At indoor fitness facilities, unsupervised low-intensity individual and group exercises are allowed by appointment only. According to the government, low-intensity includes weightlifting, low-intensity dance classes, yoga, barre and indoor climbing. Low intensity use of treadmills, ellipticals and related equipment is also permitted. All indoor fitness must be pre-registered and there will be no drop-ins allowed.
High-intensity activities, including running, spin and high-intensity interval training, continue to be allowed only on a one-on-one basis with a trainer, or training with a household and one trainer.
A decision on Step 3 will be made after at least three weeks of evaluation to assess the spread of COVID-19.
