Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced during her daily update on COVID-19 Thursday that the province was not relaxing public health measures despite a downward trend in several key metrics.

Hinshaw said that she was “proud of the sacrifices and community spirit Albertans have shown” but that the province “was not in the clear just yet.”

Jan. 21 was mentioned as the earliest possible date that public health restrictions could be lifted when the measures were extended earlier in the month.

The province identified 678 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday out of about 14,000 tests. There were 16 more deaths confirmed deaths associated with the disease. Meanwhile, 726 Albertans remain in hospital, with 119 of those in intensive care.

Hinshaw said while the province’s positivity rate, active cases numbers and new cases are moving in the right direction, the number of hospitalizations and ICU admissions remains high— and concerning.
