Toronto Mayor John Tory and other city health officials on Wednesday delivered a response after the Ontario government introduced a provincewide stay-at-home order and enacted its third state of emergency, outlining the steps Toronto has taken to stem the spread of COVID-19 in the city.

Tory said pop-up and mobile clinics are being deployed in the coming days to get vaccines into Toronto’s highest-risk areas.

The city’s top doctor, medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa, also addressed the decision to close area schools, as the city combats a third wave of the pandemic that’s largely driven by more contagious variants of the coronavirus.

The doctor said the decision was “taken very deliberately and with a great deal of consideration,” but was necessary to protect the health and safety of children and educators.
