Quebec's Public Security Minister Geneviève Guilbault outlined on Thursday details of a nightly curfew that starts on Saturday to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Guilbault stressed that while there are a few exceptions, most people should be staying home between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. as ordered. People caught flouting the new rule between Jan. 9 and Feb. 8 could face fines ranging from $1,000 to $6,000.

“We all know these measures are demanding, but ultimately we’re doing this to save lives,” she said.
Guilbault explained that Quebecers will have to be able to provide proof as to why they are outside at night if they are stopped by police.

The province reported 2,519 new cases linked to the novel coronavirus Thursday, and 74 additional deaths. Health authorities say 16 Quebecers died in the past 24 hours.
