Quebec Premier François Legault announced on Tuesday that the government would gradually lift restrictions in some regions that were hit hard by a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic as the number of cases drop across the province.

Legault said high schools in the Quebec City area will physically reopen starting next week and the curfew will be pushed from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. as of next Monday. Non-essential businesses in this area will also be allowed to reopen.

The Outaouais region, meanwhile, will see elementary school students return to class next week, while other emergency measures will remain in effect.

The latest update comes as Quebec reported its lowest tally of new infections in nearly six weeks on Tuesday with 797 new cases.
