During a technical briefing by Environment Canada on Saturday, Gerald Chang, a meteorologist with the organization, touched upon what levels of smoke Ontarians and Québécois affected by the ongoing, and “still out of control” wildfires should expect on Sunday.

Though rain is forecasted for Quebec this weekend and throughout next week, Chang says he could not determine whether it will be enough to extinguish the province’s ongoing fires, adding that the downpour will likely only have a “limited effect.”

On Friday, Cheng said that wildfire smoke had become widespread in major cities across Canada, and even the U.S., and had also been an issue for remote Indigenous communities that are closer to the fires.

Smoke and flames continue to engulf much of Canada, with Alberta imposing new evacuation orders, Manitoba bracing for heavy, lightning-generating thunderstorms and high wildfire risk, and poor air quality from coast to coast.

Air pollution from wildfires remained well above healthy levels across much of southern and northern Ontario and several communities in British Columbia and Alberta. Forecasters expect moderately bad air quality on Friday and Saturday throughout most of Ontario.
