Environment Canada held a technical briefing on Friday related to the Ontario and Quebec weather forecasts, and the general air quality due to the wildfires burning there, in BC, in Nova Scotia, in Alberta, and elsewhere.
Gerald Cheng of Environment Canada said while wildfire smoke has become widespread to major cities across Canada, and even the U.S., this has always been an issue for remote Indigenous communities that are closer to the fires.
He also stated the importance for meteorologists of keeping track of the fires, and monitoring where the smoke is going, keeping an eye out for air quality.
Smoke and flames continue to engulf much of Canada, with Alberta imposing new evacuation orders, Manitoba bracing for heavy, lightning-generating thunderstorms and high wildfire risks and poor air quality from coast to coast.
Air pollution from wildfires remained well above healthy levels across much of southern and northern Ontario and several communities in British Columbia and Alberta. Forecasters expect moderately bad air quality on Friday and Saturday throughout most of Ontario.
